Discussion & Conclusion

Q: Is it related to the results presented before? Do you consider them as coherent?

A: Good

Comments: The Discussion establishes that the administration of yam rice powder (YRP) and ethanol extract of YRP (EEYR) significantly decreased serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) in diabetic mice. The Discussion illustrates the various factors which influence the cholesterol-lowering property of EEYR. It highlights that the findings of the clinical trials confirm the hypoglycemic activities of ethanol extract solution of YRP (ESYR). The findings of the study from both the animal and clinical tests confirm the hypoglycemic effect of YRP. Relevant literature has been cited to support the Discussion. The study concludes that YRP can be used as a promising anti-diabetic food in the management of diabetes.

Further comments on the paper

Comments: The study investigates the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and anti-peroxidative effects of yam rice powder (YRP) derived from Tremella aurantialba on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice and diabetic patients. The study evaluated the anti-diabetic effects of YRP and its ethanol extract. It studied the possibility of using YRP as a hypoglycermic food due to its high content of polysaccharides and saponins. The findings of the study suggest that YRP has the potential to enhance hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties in STZ-induced diabetic mice and diabetic patients. The findings provide insights into the mechanism underlying the anti-diabetic effects of YRP. The study illustrates that the ethanol extract solution of YRP (ESYR) has the potential to replace chemical drugs to control the fasting blood glucose (FBG) and postprandial blood glucose levels of diabetic patients. The study concludes that YRP could possibly be used as food to prevent or manage diabetes.
