Systematic Review of Accelerometer Based Navigation in Total Knee Arthroplasty: Improved Alignment, Clinical Results, and Patient Reported Outcomes Compared to Conventional Guides?

Review Data

§  Significance of the Study: This is a systematic review of studies comparing postoperative outcomes such as mechanical axis alignment, operative time, blood loss, complications, and clinical outcome scores in total knee arthroplasty patients using of Accelerometer-Based portable Navigation (ABN) versus conventional intramedullary guides. The authors conclude that ABN offers the benefit of improved mechanical alignment.

§  Fit with the Scope of the Journal: The manuscript perfectly fits with the scope of the Journal of Surgery and Rehabilitation.

§  The experiments performed are really convincing and the observations are properly discussed and explained in the Discussion section. The conclusions are consistent with the evidences presented in this article. Further research is required to determine the cost effectiveness of this technology as well as to improve the outcomes like reducing the early and long-term complications and reducing the hospital readmissions.

§  A few minor errors (already corrected in the galley proof) are listed below:

o   Figure 11 and Table 3 are given but not mentioned in the text section.

o   Words like “postoperative”, “preoperative” and “intraoperative” should be written as single word throughout the text.

o   Words like “accelerometer-based”, “computer-assisted”, “robotic-assisted”, “patient-specific”, “patient-reported outcomes” should be hyphenated.

o   In the 4th sentence of the 2nd paragraph of the Introduction, the word “preoperative advanced imaging” should be reordered as “advanced preoperative imaging”.

o   In the 1st sentence of the 3rd paragraph of the Introduction, the space must be removed between “micro” and “electromechanical”. In the same sentence, the word “resections” should be “resection”.

o   In the 2nd sentence of the 4th paragraph of the Introduction, the word “effect” must be replaced with “affect”.

o   the word “potential” should be replaced with “potentially” i) In the last sentence of the 4th paragraph of the Introduction and ii) In the last sentence of the 3rd paragraph of the Discussion.

o   in the 3rd sentence of the 1st paragraph of Search strategy and Criteria, “on October 2018” should be “in October 2018”.

o   In the last sentence of the 3rd paragraph under the sub-heading Is Portable Navigation Able to Achieve Neutral Mechanical Alignment More Consistently During TKA?  of Results, “pooling the data form” must be changed as “pooling the data from”.
