Discussion & Conclusion

Q: Is it related to the results presented before? Do you consider them as coherent?

A: Very good

Comments:

The Discussion section aptly summarizes the observations of the study with the help of relevant literature. It stresses on the significance of a novel haptic, based on four-stage amplification mechanism which appears to produce improved lens power, increased near vision and high displacement amplification ratio in pseudophakic patients. Less than 5% error between theoretical method and finite element analysis (FEA) further validates the current research.

Further comments on the paper

Comments: This study provides a valuable insight into the analysis and design of ‘focus shift’ intraocular lens technology (IOL) based on flexure hinges. The development of a modified haptics design allows the optic lens to move forward in connection with haptics as a result of the transmission of ciliary muscle contraction. This study also evaluates the effectiveness of lever-type and bridge-type flexible amplification mechanisms by calculating the amplification ratio of the proposed four-stage amplifier which results in an improved lens power, higher displacement amplification ratio and better near visual performance for pseudophakic patients. The effectiveness of compliance features of flexure hinges, mechanism dimension and amplification ratio based on finite-element analysis (FEA) and experimental methods are also analysed in this study.
