Significance of the Study: This review article focuses on the efficacy of oral care and oral management for reducing the incidence of pneumonia in elderly persons. It highlights the beneficial role of dental prosthetic rehabilitation in maintenance and restoration of oral and swallowing function to prevent aspiration pneumonia (ASP). Although there is an amount of evidences of oral care for ASP prevention, there are some controversies of the clinical significance of oral care for ASP treatment.

 

Fit with the Scope of the Journal: The manuscript perfectly fits with the scope of the journal Dental Oral Biology and Craniofacial Research.

 

This review article presents the common clinical manifestations of ASP as well as discusses different therapies such as dysphagia therapy, swallowing rehabilitation, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) for the treatment of ASP in elderly patients. Sufficient information on previous study findings has been provided in this article. It also adequately discusses the literature relevant to this study. Figures and tables are briefly explained.

 

The manuscript is mostly well-written except a few minor errors (already corrected in the galley proof) that are listed below:

 

o   Words like “microaspiration”, “oropharyngeal”, “healthcare”, “misswallowing”, “postoperative” should be written as single word.

o   The word “Angiotensin-converting” should be hyphenated.

o   Words like “patients”, “care”, “pneumonia”, “determined”, “health”, “initiation” are misspelled in the text section of the article.

o   In the 4th sentence of the 2nd paragraph of the Introduction, the word “repeatedly” should be replaced with “repeated” before “occurrence”.

o   In the 3rd sentence of the Definition of Oral Care and Oral Management, “of” should be removed before “oral management”.

o   In the heading The Controversy Results of Oral Care for the Prevention of Pneumonia in Elder Patients in Several Circumstances, the word “Elder” should be replaced with “Elderly”.

o   The 2nd sentence of the 1st paragraph of The Controversy Results of Oral Care for the Prevention of Pneumonia in Elder Patients in Several Circumstances should be rephrased as “Yoneyama and others first described”.

o   In the 1st sentence of the 2nd paragraph of The Controversy Results of Oral Care for the Prevention of Pneumonia in Elder Patients in Several Circumstances, “to” should be replaced with “could” before “determine”.
